The function of a trademark is identification. 
This paper explain modern trademarks in 
relation to two other issues 
design programmes and branding 
Iden tifica tion often takes place wi thin the 
framework of a design program 
The term ' branding' has been adopted in 
modern marketing termirology 
to mean the marking of products 
Both design programmes and branding are 
methods for corporate identity‘ 
one on the organizationallevel. the other on the 
product level 
A new definition of trade marks and a way of 
classifying them according 
to selected qualities , is intended to expand our 
understanding of them by highlighting t heir 
similarities and differences 
The principles of the division, chosen to reflect 
characteristics of function and design, include 
material qualities (what the trademarks show) 
and referential qualit ies ( what the trademarks 
mean ).
