| 내용 | 찰스 레니 맥킨토시 의자디자인의 사례와 특성 Examples and Characteristics of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Chair Design 김 진 우 건국대학교 디자인조형대학 실내디자인과 부교수 Kim, Jinwoo Department of Interior Design, Konkuk University * 이 논문은 2008년도 건국대학교 학술진흥연구비 지원에 의한 논문임 ---------------------------------------------------------------- 1. 서 론 1.1. 목적과 의의 1.2. 범위와 방법 2. 맥킨토시의 생애와 작품세계 2.1. 1기: 활동의 초기 (1891-1900) 2.2. 2기: 전성기 (1900-1906) 2.3. 3기: 위기의 시기 (1906-1914) 2.4. 4기: 부르주아에서 보헤미안으로 (1914-1923) 3. 맥킨토시 의자디자인의 시대별 사례 3.1. 1기 (1891-1900) 3.2. 2기 (1900-1906) 3.3. 3기 (1906-1914) 3.4. 4기 (1914-1923) 4. 결론: 맥킨토시 의자디자인의 특성 5. 요약 및 향후과제 참고문헌 논문요약 본 연구의 목적은 찰스 레니 맥킨토시(Charles Rennie Mackintosh, 1868-1928)가 평생에 걸쳐 디자인 한 가구 중에서 의자 디자인의 사례를 분석하여 특성을 도출하는데 있다. 오늘날 분야와 역할 간의 경계가 허물어지고 새롭게 통합되는 과정에서 디자인의 개념이 확장되는 가운데 종합예술가로서의 삶을 추구했던 맥킨토시의 생과 작품을 분석해 보는 것이 의미가 있을 것이라 생각했다. 특히 현재까지 양산되고 있는 소수의 가구작품을 포함해서 도면과 사진으로만 남아있는 그의 가구 중 의자류만을 취합한 후 시기적으로 분류하고 분석해 봄으로써 추후 이어질 수 있는 심도 있는 연구의 출발점이 될 수 있을 것이다. 본 논문에서는 알란 크로포드(Alan Crawford)가 그의 저서 <찰스 레니 맥킨토시(Charles Rennie Mackintosh)>에서 사용한 분류에 따라 현재까지 기록으로 남아있는 의자(chair 혹은 armchair)류를 4개의 시기로 나누어 서술한 후 의자 27개의 특징을 조형적, 구조적, 기능적으로 도출했다. 조형적으로는 기하학적인 조형과 유기적인 장식이 공존했으며, 구조적으로는 불안정했고 양산성에 적합하지 않았으나 제작기술의 발전으로 그 한계를 넘어섰다. 기능적으로는 공간을 분리하고 통제하는 실내디자인의 요소로, 앉기 위한 도구라기보다는 예술 작품으로서의 역할을 하는 등 기능성과 예술성을 동시에 추구했다. 건축가로서의 성공적인 행보에도 불구하고 그는 언제나 예술가로서 인식되길 바랐으며 이러한 철학은 당시 범람하던 조악한 양산가구들 사이에서 군계일학과도 같은 가구조형의 탄생으로 실현됐다. 주제어 찰스 레니 맥킨토시, 의자디자인, 특성 Abstract The purpose of this study is to summarize and analyze the chair designs created by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868~1928). Today many are revisiting the blurring boundaries between the role of the architect, designer and artist. As a result, it will be meaningful to analyze the work of Mackintosh who pursued all of these disciplines throughout his life. In particular, Mackintosh's chair designs have not been examined as much as his architectural works have been critiqued, and in addition other architects furniture design has been analyzed much more. This study has chosen 27 chairs out of 400 furniture pieces and has classified them into 4 periods in accordance with the classifications noted in the book “Charles Rennie Mackintosh” by Alan Crawford. The characteristics of Mackintosh chairs include: 1) Form: appropriately harmonized geometrical form and organic elements. 2) Structure: not strong enough and had problems in mass production because of long and complicated patterned back design. However, current manufacturing technology has overcome these problems. 3) Function: chairs were performing multiple functions as room dividers, partitions, and even sculptures. He created the furniture not only to sit on, but also as a symbolic, and/or useful element. In addition to his success as an architect, he wanted to be recognized as an artist. While others were mass producing plain, functional furniture, Mackintosh realized the furniture could have form, structure, function and be a piece of art.
